Jimi Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942. On September 11, 1946, Jimi's parents changed his name officially to James Marshall Hendrix. Jimi first learned to play on a borrowed guitar and was discovered some years later by Chas Chandler, bass player for The Animals. Chas was so impressed with Jimi's guitar prowness and innovation that he became Jimi's manager. Shortly thereafter, Jimi formed The Experience with Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. The group released their first single, 'Hey Joe', on December 13, 1966. In May of 1967, the group released their first album, 'Are You Experienced?'. Other songs they released were 'The Wind Cries Mary', 'Purple Haze', 'Wild Thing', 'Star Spangled Banner', 'If 6 Were 9' and 'Voodoo Chile'. On September 18, 1970, Jimi Hendrix died from suffocation in his own vomit after an overdose of barbiturates.
